The Canary Islands are one of the pioneering countries in the world in the purification of sea water and in technology related to desalination. Due to their peculiar nature, the Canary Islands suffer from the availability of drinking water: the waters coming from the subsoil are not sufficient to satisfy the demand. In order to increase the production of drinking water, desalination plants have been installed since the 1960s to treat both seawater and groundwater and with this treatment approximately 121 hm per year of water are supplied. In Lanzarote, exactly in 1964, the first plant in Spain was built.
